Backstage Workshop
Backstage with Crane River Theater
July 29th and 30th 2011
Backstage with Crane River Theater is a new educational opportunity created to provide opportunities for high school students across the state to receive a backstage look at a professional production and take part in a series of theatrical workshops. The participating production for 2011 will be Little Shop of Horrors. Available workshops will range from acting, musical theater and dance to video production and stage combat. Workshops
Calling All Actors
Taught by Steve Barth, Artistic Director of Crane River Theater
Theater is a reflection of life. In life we pursue goals, face challenges, and attempt to overcome. Acting is no different. It is simply the pursuit of a goal. Along the way characters encounter obstacles and attempt to overcome these obstacles through tactics. This workshop will allow students to utilize these tools to bring a character to life.
Behind the Camera
Taught by Matt Bross and Chad Eacker, Owners of Delinea Design in Omaha
Learn the fundamentals of filmmaking in this intense workshop! Students will get hands-on experience, behind the camera, as they learn to shoot a scripted scene. See what it takes to bring all of the essential elements of sound, lighting, and camera together. Final scenes will be edited together and will be viewable online by all participants.
The Motivated Gesture
Taught by Dr. Anne Foradori, Professor of Musical Theater at UNK
Do you ever wonder what to do with your hands while you’re singing? How to “fill space” during an introduction, closing, or musical bridge? How to create a character or define an object or location? This workshop explores the use of motivated gestures in musical theater songs as a means to enhance your role as musical story-teller. Students are encouraged to bring prepared selections to coach.
Unarmed Stage Combat
Taught by Harris Smith, Head of the Professional Actor Training Program at UNL
Students will learn how to successfully execute an unarmed fight for stage and some technique for fighting for film. Students will also learn how to make a fight exciting while incorporating characterization and using various safety techniques.
Preparing the Audition
Taught by Actors from Crane River Theater Company
A step by step guide through the essential steps of auditioning. Casting yourself, finding material, preparing the song and monologue, walking into the room, and selling yourself in the audition. Learn everything you need to know to get the part.
Choreography
Taught by Liza Thalken, Actress, Dancer and Choreographer
Whether you are a dancer or not, this is the workshop for you. A choreographer will lead you through the basic elements of dance and keys to learning choreography that will help you in any performance. The secrets to good theatrical movement for the stage will be revealed as you are taken through an intensive choreography session.
Improvisation for the Stage
Taught by Actors from Crane River Theater Company
Discover the joy of theater through improvisation. We all know it’s funny, but down deeper there’s more to it than that. Improv is about making a connection with each other and portraying true emotion in an imaginary environment. Students will work with games and exercises that encourage creativity, imagination and play.
